La specie è suddivisa in tre sottospecie :​

* Lophophorus s. sclateri.................. Jerdon......................1870 - Diatribuito nel sud-est del Tibet e Yunnan settentrionale ( Cina), nord-est Arunachal Pradesh ( India ) e nord Myanmar.

* Lophophorus s. orientalis.............. Davison G.W.H. ..... 1974 -  Distribuito nel nord-est del Myanmar e adiacente nord-ovest Yunnan  ( Cina ).

* Lophophorus s. arunachalensis.... Kumar & Singh....... 2004 -  Distribuito nel nord-ovest dell'Arunachal Pradesh - distretti del Subansiri inferiore e del Kameng orientale, e  forse al confine tra i distretti di Tawang e West Kameng,  nel nord-est dell'India.
